Smart Bears, Angry Rats

Brown and Grey  75 years from now

The den was just a gap between two overlapping flat rocks.  Before dawn Brown and Grey were on top of the den, peering in.  Brown saw the snake moving slowly in the cool morning air.  He fought the urge to run.

Grey ran across the opening to the den.  The snake slithered after her.  Brown jumped from the overhanging top rock onto the snake's back, biting him just behind his head. His saliva mixed with the snake's blood.

Grey circled around and dug her teeth into the snake's belly.  When she tasted blood, she let go, slid down the snake's body, and bit him again.  She did this again and again until the snake was covered in bloody cuts.

Meanwhile, Brown sank his teeth deeper and deeper into the snake, refusing to let go as the snake twisted and coiled around him.

Finally Brown felt the snake go slack.  He thought the snake might be dead and he let go.  Grey let go as well.  To their horror, the snake slithered into the clearing, and rolled in the dust, using it to help stop the bleeding.

Just as the snake turned to face them, a hawk swooped down and grabbed the infected snake.  The two mice crawled into their new home, exhausted, but safer

Today I will accept that 'snakes' rarely go away easily.

The beginning of the end

When I walked into the break room, The Other Ken and Krista were discussing the daytime clients.  The gist of their conversation was most of the daytimers were ready to be stepped down to weekly sessions.

I really liked this group.  Being in their company had taught me many valuable lessons.  But, I had to agree with the two therapists, it was time for many of the clients to move on.

"Who is going first?"  I asked.

"Probably Violet," The Other Ken said.  Krista nodded her head in agreement.  And so it began to end.

Today I will accept most good things come to an end.
