New Day
Billie and Kim sat down next to me. Sam asked them about
their new boyfriends. Kim said hers
seemed like a kind and patient person.
Billie said the same about her boyfriend, but wondered what
he was really like. “Anybody can pretend
to be nice early on. Let’s see what he’s like a month from now.”
“How long are you going to let suspicion keep you from
enjoying his company?” Kim asked Billie, rolling her eyes and gesturing with
her hands. “He is a nice guy.”
“Let’s say we get married and spend the next thirty years
together,” Billie said. “When he dies I will hire a private investigator to see
if he was leading a double life. Check for hidden bank accounts. Look into all
the women who come to the viewing and funeral.”
“I get it,” I said. “Your ex betrayed you. This guy isn’t
your ex. Give him a chance. Having someone enter your life is like a new day dawning. Give the new day a chance.”
Billie thought for a moment, smiled, and said. “No.”
Kim wrapped her arm around her friend’s shoulders, and said
softly, “I love you. You’re an idiot.”
Today I will give the new day and new people a chance.
