Could be Worse

Randy handed me my paycheck. “Can I cash this right away?” I asked.

“I’m sorry you have to ask me that,” Randy said. “Go ahead and cash it. We’re good for a couple of months.”

We sat in silence for a moment.

“I feel terrible you had to wait last time to cash your check,” Randy said.

I shrugged. “Sometimes rewards don’t come immediately, or even when we expect them.  Sometimes they don’t come at all. I just try to do the next right thing and hope for the best.”

Today I’ll do the next right thing and hope for the best.
