Changes that Stick
I didn’t know it then, but I wouldn’t see Terry again
for ten years. I ran into him at a conference on drunk driving. He was running a DUI prevention program in the
local schools.
Terry had finally matured in his fifties. His program was highly regarded. He had saved his marriage, and he was proud
to tell me he was a much better grandfather than he’d been a father.
We talked about how people change. Terry told me about a kid he had known who
should have gone to jail, but grew up to become a widely respected District
Attorney. The DA was prosecuting the
abusive husband of a woman Terry had met an AA meeting. Nobody had thought she’d
ever find the strength to file charges, let alone follow through with the
entire legal process.
“She’s a new woman, Ken. Gives you hope, doesn’t it?” he asked. “Sometimes the changes stick.”
Today I will be grateful for positive changes that stick.
