50. Going to the Dogs
My curiosity got the better of me, and I asked Howard, “How’d you sabotage your second marriage?” 

“Cats and dogs,” he said. “I did a lot of stupid things, but when I had a little buzz on I’d visit animal shelters. At one point we had eleven dogs and seven cats.”

“Your heart was in the right place,” I said.

He smiled. “I love animals, but I needed to use my head. Now that I’m sober, I’m gonna keep one of each, and volunteer at the pound.”

Today I will remember even a good heart needs guidance from a clear head.
