54. Practice,
Practice
Out of the blue, Street Sign said, “I was at the VA hospital
yesterday. The cancer’s back.”
I looked directly at him, and to my surprise he was
smiling. “You seem awfully calm about
it,” I said.
“I’m not calm. I’m
smug. I’m way too impressed with
myself. Want to know why?”
I did. I nodded.
“I’ve gotten so good at practicing acceptance, the prospect
of my own death doesn’t rattle me. I am the acceptance master.” I was impressed
and I told him so.
Today I will practice acceptance.
