Triggers
The next day I was riding my bike on the Montour Trail when
I smelled charcoal just beginning to burn.
Someone who lived near the trail was cooking out.
I smiled, remembering my dad grilling burgers in the
backyard.
The smell would make my mouth water. I remembered the flare
ups he said gave the burgers flavor. He’d
top them with a slice of Velveeta almost too thick to melt.
So many things trigger people’s anger. A change in seasons
triggers depression for some folks. In the rehab we warn people to avoid
relapse triggers, reminders of their drug of choice.
I peddled along, grateful for things that trigger good
memories.
Today I’ll be grateful for whatever triggers a good memory.
