One Too Many
After the meeting, we lined up to thank the speaker. I asked her what kind of work she had been
doing before she got sober.
“I was an air traffic controller,” she said.
My jaw dropped. She laughed.
“I’m kidding. I worked in an insurance office. After I got fired, I drank alone. I used to
tell myself it was OK because I wasn’t hurting anyone but me.”
“And you realized that wasn’t true, you were hurting the
people you loved,” I guessed.
She shook her head. “Not really. Not at first. Out of the
blue it dawned on me. Hurting nobody but me was hurting one person too
many.”
Today I’ll remember hurting only myself is hurting one person
too many.
